He really did know exactly who Jasmine Jefferson was.
In the moment he talked her down from her panic attack, while his eyes were locked on hers, heâd known. Heâd backed away because of the force of that knowing.
But now, kneeling before her with her face cradled in his hands, there was no retreating. There was something about being the one person in her entire everyday world who knew who she really was that reached out and burrowed into his soul. And it made him feel strong. Capable of anything.
Even of trusting someone with his heart again.
She felt it, too, leaning toward him slightly, the expression in her eyes different somehow. She knewâ
âSo you want a burger? Thatâs what Iâm hearing?â
Will dropped his hands from Jasmineâs face and broke away so fast, he nearly fell backward. Instead, he scrambled to his feet, shaking his head.
What in the world had he been about to do?
Sean appeared in the doorway staring at his phone screen. âIâve always wanted to eat at The Cookie Jar. Saw it on some food channel once.â He lifted his head and looked between the two of them. His expression shifted into a question, as though he could feel the charge in the air.
âYou watch food TV in your spare time? Maybe we could have you cook dinner instead of ordering out.â
Cocking his head like Scout did when he was confused, Sean tried to read Will before he answered. âI watched with Ivy once.â Almost as though he regretted bringing the past up, Sean lifted his phone. âIâll have them deliver.â He disappeared into the other room, and his voice soon drifted back, placing the order.
âWhoâs Ivy?â Behind him, Jasmineâs voice was low but stronger than it had been before.
âHis ex-wife. Pretty sure he regrets the ex part, though.â It was obvious from the way Sean spoke of Ivy on the rare occasions when he did. A couple of months ago, his teammate had reached out to Ivy for help finding the family of Eliâs godmother, but he hadnât spoken much about the interaction. Heâd been slightly off his game ever since, though. Not in a major way, but enough that Will had noticed.
âOkay, the food will be here in a little under an hour.â Sean came into the room, holstering his phone. Heâd also changed into civilian clothes, and it was clear they were all ready to relax for the evening, if they could. âHave you talked to her yet?â
Jasmine stood. âTalked to me about what?â
This really wasnât a conversation he was looking forward to. Will sensed she was the kind of person who didnât offer her trust lightly but, once she did, she would be loyal to the end. He was about to present her with a gut feeling and no evidence to back it up. If he wasnât careful, he could shake her faith in him and in Sean, just when he needed it most.
He glanced at his teammate, who sat on the end of Jasmineâs bed.
